Behind the Scenes: Cover Art for Statue of a Dragon

Amelia is working on cover art for all of her middle grade chapter books. This is because each book will have advertising pages in the back of the book that advertise her other books. So cover art for all of the books must be worked on! Here you can see her working on the cover for her Statue of a Dragon book.
The first step in her process is to do multiple small pencil mock-ups and get feedback on which design people like the best.
Next, is to do full size pencil sketches. One for the artwork and one for the text. Here you can see the artwork laid over the text on the lightpad.
The next step is to overlay a blank piece of paper over the pencil sketch and then use fine tip sharpie to draw out the outlines. Then alcohol markers are used to color the picture. Here are the color versions of the title and the artwork.
The next step at this point is to scan in the title and artwork. Then the two are combined digitally. Different background colors are tested digitally. This is how it looks digitally so far.
